JULY 2009 King of the Mountain Race Day – Pomona, Sunshine Coast Sunday 26 July Once again
the fearless Fatburners team is taking part in the King of the Mountain Race at Pomona, which is celebrating its 30th year in 2009. Way back in 1979, the Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club formed the King of the Mountain Committee to revive and
make the race an annual event. The race is now run on the Fourth Sunday of July each year & has become a major Internationally recognised sporting event on the Sunshine Coast Calendar. The race has 5 categories, Junior, Open
Male, Open Women, Veteran, Masters. The race runs from the centre of Pomona township, past streets crowded with well-wishers & supporters, then heads 'bush' towards the mountain. The runners commence climbing a set of low
hills before confronting the mountain. The track up the mountain is little more than a goat track, with parts now modified with steps. In some places, it is only wide enough for 1 or 2 runners. The mountain provides a steep almost
vertical climb. The return down the mountain requires strength, agility, a good sense of balance, & an immunity to fear. The course, & indeed the race, has to be seen to be believed! Entrants in the King of the Mountain come
from all over Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Rim & the United Kingdom. There is a strong rivalry between Australia & New Zealand participants. The race record was set in 1987 by Graham Baralett of Queensland who
completed the course in 22min 50 sec. In 2008, 21 years since the record was set, Neil Labinsky, 3rd year consecutive winner, was just 6 seconds off the record time. Can a Fatburner beat it? In 2008, in the Mens Open, Matt Collins came
in at a respectable 16th place while Jennifer Forster came in only 5 mins behind the winner to claim a fabulous 4th place in the Womens Open. Can they better it this year? Fatburners loves a challenge so we’re gonna give it a
try! If you think the photos of Matt look a bit umm…raunchy–there’s a rational explanation. No, Big Foot didn’t attack him & rip his shorts off while he was up the mountain – Matt chose to wear a
pink g-string last year as a Dare & ended up raising $10,000 for charity. As we said—fearless & very brave (with a cute butt to boot that is now quite famous due to his photo ending up in the Sunshine Coast Daily!!) Visit the website to find out more about the King of the Mountain Race Day at Pomona.
